Which Vitamin C Are You Taking?
Words & Photos by Jeong-Yoon Lee
Since I’m sticking to one meal a day these days, I only take supplements that feel absolutely necessary — the “musts,” if you will.
Top of the list is lutein. I spend a lot of time in front of screens, so eye health is a non-negotiable. Then there’s omega-3 — I’ve heard all the good things about it, and it became part of my routine pretty naturally. While some people avoid cooking fish at home because of the smell or hassle, I try to keep mackerel and other fish stocked up and ready to go.
And finally… the star of today’s post: Vitamin C.
They say when people face financial stress, fruit is one of the first things they stop buying. That really hit home for me. I used to love buying and eating fruit, but now that prices have shot up, I find myself just sticking to vegetables. I know eating too much fruit can raise your sugar levels, but still — fruit makes me happy, and not having it as often lately is a bit sad.
So I turned to a megadose Vitamin C supplement — 3000mg in powder form. Sounds great, right? But I soon realized… I really don’t like powder supplements. The sour aftertaste that lingers in your mouth, the weird texture — ugh. I found myself skipping it more and more, and eventually, I just gave up.
That’s when I reached for a bottle I had stashed away: Korean brand’s Neutral Vitamin C 1000mg tablets. These are smooth to swallow, easy on the stomach, and since then, they’ve become my go-to.
If you’ve ever taken Vitamin C on an empty stomach, you know it can cause that uncomfortable, sour, burning sensation. I may not always notice it right away, but I did feel a bit of discomfort from time to time. So now, I’ve set an 11AM alarm, and I always drink a glass of soy milk before taking my supplements.
Neutral Vitamin C, just like the name suggests, has a neutral pH (around 6–7). That means it doesn’t react as harshly with stomach acid and is gentler for those with sensitive digestion. It’s absorbed more slowly than regular Vitamin C, but it stays in your system longer, helping with sustained antioxidant support and immunity.
For me, it was all about the swallow, not just the science.
Sure, it’s great to know all the benefits, but at the end of the day, you have to go with what works for you. If your stomach’s sensitive or you’re just not into powders like me, try neutral Vitamin C in tablet form. Easy, smooth, and no fuss.
Let’s keep taking care of ourselves — in ways that feel right for us. 🧡
